A small area in the southwestern tip of the village has been designated for high school attendance in Mundelein, IL. It is home to Vernon Hills High School, a private school for students from across the state of Illinois. We visit a small group of students who live on the northwest corner of Vernon Hill and attend the same school as the students who live in the southwest corner of Vernon Hills but in a different building.
In 2006, Hawthorn Junior High School was formally split into two separate schools, one in Vernon Hills and the other in Mundelein. The former museum garden Cuneo Estates still houses its museum and garden, but the annexed land has been developed. These include the site of the new high school, as well as the Vernon Hill Community Center, a public library and a park.
